FIESTAS
Periana is an ideal place for party lovers who wish to enjoy
the many fiestas which are held in the village itself and nearby
towns, throughout the year.
These include:
Easter week (Semana Santa):
Celebrated from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. As with many villages,
there is a parade held in Periana, from the town church; with
locals carrying Christ on a cross and the Virgin Mary in mourning.
More famous and grander still, is the parade held in Malaga;
whilst closer by, RioGordo hosts a series of passion plays.
Spring Fairs
Festival of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers, held on
15th of May. The annual fiesta in Periana, incorporates traditional
and local bands, parades, flamenco shows and fireworks. This
is usually followed by a weekend Romeria (pilgrimage) down to
Lake Vinuela, where the locals camp out and enjoy more music
and dancing!
Summer Fairs
The Fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen, the protectress of seamen,
held on the 16th of July. In the evening the coastal towns and
villages parade the virgins statue, before setting her out to
sail. The event involves much noise, colour and pageantry, as
other brightly decorated sailing boats join her, and the event
is accompanied by morefireworks displays. Both Nerja and Caleta
de Velez (near Torre de Mar) are known to put on a good show.
All other towns in Andalucia host a summer fair; with more music
and dancing, fairground rides and parades, and people, of all
ages, in true fiesta spirit, partying til all hours. In Periana,
a fiesta is held to celebrate the Peach harvest, is held at
the end of August. A much larger fair, the Feria de Malaga,
is an annual 9 day event, also during August.
Autumn Fairs
A fiesta celebrating San Miguel and held in Alfarnetejo and
Velez Malaga.
Vendiamos, celebrating the grape harvest occurs during late
August and September, with Competa (famed for is sweet wine)
holding a Night of wine every August 15th.
Winter Fairs
Las Navidades (Christmas), is generally a quiet affair in Periana
and an opportunity to escape the pressures of a celebrations
at home. Typically it commences with La Nochebuena (Xmas eve),
with family feasts and midnight mass.
In Malaga the Fiesta de Mayor de Verdiales is held every 28th
of December, celebrating the music of the Verdiales folk groups,
unique to the Malaga area. The Fiesta de Los Reyes, The Fiesta
of Kings, is held on the 6th of January; the traditional day
for present giving for Spanish children. In Periana, as is typical
of the region, a parade of three Kings on horse back, pass through
the streets scattering sweets to eager children.
